Our History

A note from the Board 1975

INVESTMENT in our new edge-of town auction complex, completed ahead of schedule, represents a massive vote of confidence by the board of Dingwall and Highland Marts in the future of farming and crofting in the Highlands and Islands.

Board members have found the process both exciting and nerve-wracking but we support the transparency and price-setting ability of the live auction system and firmly believe that livestock auctions are essential to the future of our industry.

We are delighted that Captain Roderick Stirling, Lord Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh, has agreed to perform the opening ceremony and that our mart will have a blessing from Free Church minister Rev Derek Lamont, son-in-law of the late Farquhar Renwick of Inverbroom -a director for many years and a staunch supporter of this development.
Livestock will take centre stage from day one and we are delighted that former Royal Highland and Agricultural Society president Sandy Brown -who is also a good customer -is our first judge.

T.S.H. Burns and Son of Dingwall have donated a magnificent silver trophy for the overall beef champion on July 15 and we can also present special trophies to the winning exhibitors in the pairs and pens of four being judged on July 16 -thanks to Conan Vets and Bill Maclver, Flowerburn Mains, Fortrose.

Our own donation of two heifers to the first sale is being made in memory of many good friends and we hope that we can send a sizeable sum to our three chosen charities -Highland Hospice, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Macmillan Nurses.

Our aim has been to make Dingwall mart as user-friendly as possible -we have tried to secure the best possible comfort levels for humans and animals in the new complex -and we are delighted with the work carried out on our behalf by SAC Building Design Services and Tulloch Civil Engineering Limited and all associated staff.

The nature of the design will also allow us to entertain visitors with ease -the gallery affords excellent views and there is no need for special footwear. We hope that this -and our new on-site catering service -will encourage townspeople, clubs and schools to make use of this wonderful new facility. As a strong, independent, local company, we are looking forward to further consolidating our roots in Dingwall.

We are committed to offering a quality, professional service to livestock producers and we want the new mart to be a real asset to the farming and crofting communities and also to the town of Dingwall.
